My Writing Process
Everyone writes differently! Here's what I do.
A shorter post today, because life is busy!
How do I write?
I usually sit at my kitchen table, because my little corner desk is stacked full of random clutter. Someday I’ll have room for a real desk, but it is not this day.
I’ll keep my notebooks handy, just in case I need to reference something from my outline or my language guide. (Yep, I had to make up a language for my fantasy novel. Instead of basing it in Latin, I based it in Ancient Greek, because I’m Greek!)
Drinks of choice include: water, tea, or drinkable chocolate. In the summer, when I find my favorite chocolate milk on sale, I indulge. In the winter, I stick to my Land O’ Lakes mint hot chocolate packets or my own hot chocolate from scratch.
I’ve spent a few articles talking about music (one, two, three articles!), so writing in complete silence is absolutely forbidden. I love the lo-fi mixes, but sometimes I am in need of some higher energy playlists. Video game soundtracks are really great for this, too.
Marcus Warner is always a win, but I’ve also enjoyed Blue Turtle’s fantasy playlists, Coding Therapy Music is great even though I’m not coding, MrSuicideSheep is great when I need more energy, and Dakirem has put out ten-hour playlists of the Silksong soundtrack. “Choral Chambers” has been listened to for over thirty hours now!
I participate in a Discord run by author Brigid Kemmerer called “Missed Deadlines,” so I do my best to create or participate in sprints that help keep me on track. This is my way of staying accountable with fellow authors!
My usual time of day to write is in the evenings, after I’ve come home from work, exercised, eaten dinner, and decompressed for a little bit. Of course, now that my schedule has changed, I just try to fit in writing when my free time allows me to do it!
I make an effort to take one day in the weekend and go to a coffee shop to write for at least two hours. The hot chocolate is good motivation, plus seeing other people also getting work done!
The library has also been a great place to write, if I can find an open area to do it! (I’m not complaining; I’m thrilled my local libraries are being used by so many people!)
So how do you write? Where do you write? When do you write? I’d love to know, so feel free to comment on this post if you want!
